What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple Myeloma, also known as Kahler's disease, is cancer in plasma cells. The plasma cells are a type of white blood cell that is found in the bone marrow.

Multiple Myeloma causes the development of cancer cells in the bone marrow. These cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that block out healthy blood cells and antibodies causing complications.

There are a number of diagnostic advancements that have taken place for the treatment of Multiple Myeloma in India. In the previous years bone marrow test, serum test electrophoresis, and the best method used were immunofixation electrophoresis. The advancement that took place in recent years has helped immensely to get effective diagnostic results for multiple myeloma patients. 

By doing diagnostic tests like electrophoresis and serum-free light chain, It is easy to find the symptoms of Multiple Myeloma patients. In case of higher degree of sensitivity, PET scan is done. 

Treatments Methods Available for Multiple Myeloma patients- 

Earlier 10-15 years back, Multiple Myeloma was a dead end and incurable disease. But particularly in the past five years treatment methods have been changed and patients are getting cured at a faster rate. 

In this treatment blood pressure or blood sugar is maintained of the patients. Chemotherapeutic drugs don’t cause hair fall, or any other major side effects. So these drugs are preferred as neoadjuvant chemotherapy. They act like steroids and highly recommended for multiple myeloma patients. 

Multiple Myeloma is usually treated with chemotherapy, it is usually drug therapy. It kills the cancerous cells and also kills normal cells. Drugs like Melphalan, Vincristine, Cyclophosphamide, Etoposide, Doxorubicin, Liposomal doxorubicin, Bendamustine will helps during chemo.

Apart from medicinal treatments, it is very important that the patients remain active which helps to maintain calcium level. Myeloma patients are recommended to have a balanced diet and increase intake of water. 

Note: Many other chemo drugs are also used for the treatment of multiple myeloma in combination with these drugs.
